How to Thrive as an Affiliate Marketer During a Recession :

There’s a lot of news these days about our gloomy economy. It seems like every week there’s another company slashing thousands of jobs, warning us about plummeting profits, or begging for an emergency government bailout.

What does this mean for you and affiliate marketing? Well, if you’re willing to learn from the past, you’ll not only ride out this economic downturn, you’ll actually thrive in it.

If you look back at the Great Depression, you’ll find that there weren’t many companies making money. In fact, there were a record number of closures and bankruptcies, and unemployment was at an all time high with 1 in 3 people without a job. Yet there was one particular sector that was generating massive amounts of cash, and that was direct response marketing.

During the Great Depression, advertising budgets were the first things to get cut when sales tanked. Even today, most companies have no idea which ads are making money, or if they’re working at all.

As an affiliate, you know how important it is to track every dollar spent against your sales. So companies that were involved with direct response marketing knew that for every $1 they spent on advertising, they got $2 back. They placed ads everywhere and saw massive profits.

You have an advantage today that they didn’t have, and that’s the Internet. People who buy things on the Internet are generally wealthier and have more disposable income, so they’re less likely to be affected by this economic downturn. Just look at Amazon.com; while retail sales were significantly down this holiday season, Amazon.com saw record sales.

With all the gloom and doom in the news, not many people realize that this is the best time to make more money. Here are some strategies to help you make the most of these tough economic times.

Recession-Proof Affiliate Strategies

#1: Expand Your Virtual Real Estate

We’ve learned from the past that the companies that profited the most were the ones that didn’t cut their advertising budget - they actually raised it. Advertising rates will begin to fall as poor marketers that don’t track conversions leave the market. Also, if you aren’t already doing so, expand your reach with advertising such as blogs, articles, SEO, social networks, forums, etc. To put it simply, if you’re making money with a product, advertise it more.

#2: Review Your ROI

Now is a great time to review the products you’re promoting and calculate your ROI (return on investment). Everyone is limited by time, and there are only so many products you can promote as an affiliate. Look for products that aren’t generating enough profit and refocus your time and energy into promoting products with high ROI, as well as testing highly profitable new niches.

#3: Don’t Forget Backend Sales

You should be building an opt-in, CAN-SPAM compliant mailing list for every site you’re promoting. That way, you can advertise related products at a very low cost. Also, when looking for publishers, look for ones that are actively building a legitimate mailing list and advertising to it. Just make sure they’re giving you credit for those sales. While you’re at it, look for publishers with up-sells that help raise your profits.

#4: Target Recession-Proof Niches

While the economy is slowing, some niches are booming. Focus on products that help people save money and solve important problems. One of the best niches today involves products related to overcoming specific health problems. With an aging population and a failing health care system, people are turning to the Internet to find solutions on their own.

#5: Promote Products With Higher Commissions

In many ClickBank categories there are a number of products competing on the same topic. If you’re promoting a product with less than 75% commission, look for an alternative. If you find that it doesn’t convert as well as the original product, try adding a pre-sale page to help boost an underperforming Web site. The point is, the more you earn per sale, the more profit you’ll make.

Remember, this recession may be a great opportunity to accumulate more wealth, and ClickBank is one of the best places to do so. Virtually all of the products on ClickBank use the direct response model that let companies make huge profits in an economic situation like the one we are in now.

Affiliate Marketing is an extremely lucrative business: basically you have the advertisers who have the campaigns they need promotion on, and you have the affiliate publishers who provide you with promotion.

TLC describes a scrubs as a guy who thinks he’s fly but he’s also known as a busta. Well, scrub in the Affiliate Marketing game has just as bad of a sentiment as TLCs version… or maybe even worse. This is when an advertiser hides transactions and leads from the reporting in order to increase their revenue margin, while supposedly easing the mind of the publisher with the promised payout. However, that publisher is not getting that payout in reality if there are scrubs, and it lowers the overall margin the publisher is receiving.

Now, if you’re in the Affiliate Marketing game… you’re probably asking why this girl has not mentioned Networks yet. Well, imagine everything I said, and then pretend the publisher now brokers out this campaign to another publisher [which is what Networks essentially do]. If this publisher [or namely network] takes a margin and a scrub the less the campaign will convert for the publisher and their traffic will essentially be giving free money to the guys from the top of the path, while those at the bottom lose the fruits of their labor.

If split testing is possible, do NOT hesitate. You never know what is going on in the backend… unless you’re my publisher :) Then you really should be thanking yourself you’re in good hands. Transparency is my name and sales are my game… I just wish the rest of the industry felt the same.

A Sweet Home-Made Summer Treat in the WebSeeds Offices

Combine the following ingredients and bake at 350 for 20minutes:

1/2 cup butter - softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda - sifted
2 tablespoon lemon or lime juice
2 cups all-purpose flour - sifted
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder - sifted
1 teaspoon salt

Icing:

2 packages of cream cheese
1 teaspoon of Pure Vanilla Extract
1/4 cup of unsalted butter [half a stick]
1 cup of icing sugar
1/4 cup of lemon juice
fruit to top

Decoration tip: put icing into ziplock bag and put it in the fridge. Let cupcakes completely cool before frosting. When cooled, cut a small piece of the corner of the ziplock with icing to control swirl of icing.

Chris Fox, the President of WebSeeds Inc., has an extremely unique story within the ClickBank community. He created his first ClickBank account in December of 2007, and had his first product launch in January of 2008. By the time 2009 rolled around, he was in the top 1% of ClickBank vendors.

How does one rise to the top so quickly? I thought I’d have a chat with him to get to the bottom of his phenomenal growth.

One has to wonder, how does a client go from nothing to the top within a single year?

For me, it took a lot of hard work in the right areas. Early on I realized the importance of having high conversion rates. It’s hard enough to attract affiliates, so when you have a new affiliate promoting your product you want to make sure they’re successful. Our team is completely obsessed with split-testing. We need to ensure that if an affiliate promotes us over a competing product they’ll experience an immediate improvement in profit.

Before you created your account with ClickBank, what were you doing?

Before I started with ClickBank, I was working for a small company selling eLearning services. We had a hard time attracting new clients so I spent the last couple of years there learning about direct marketing. I was so amazed by the flood of targeted prospects, I decided to quit and try things on my own.

Had you ever sold your own digital product before?

No.

What made you decide to pursue this venture?

Ever since my experience with that previous company, I’ve been fascinated by direct marketing. So when I started looking at what type of product I wanted to get into, it was instantly clear that digital products were the way to go. Digital products allow you to scale your business without having to jump through all the hoops that physical products require and have an infinitely lower start up cost.

How did you get started?

When I first began with this venture, I knew next to nothing about selling products through ClickBank. The few things that I did try completely failed. That was about the time I start attending seminars and watching DVD’s about Internet Marketing.

The best piece of advice I could give to people would be to learn from those that are already successful in what you want to do. This applies to both vendors and affiliates, or anyone who is trying something they’ve never done before.

Why did you choose ClickBank?

ClickBank was the right choice for me. The set up process was extremely easy, plus, your network includes over 100,000 affiliates. This gives vendors the best possible chance to make money selling digital products online.

What were the biggest difficulties that you faced?

I think the hardest part of creating a successful product is the sales page, specifically the sales copy. Writing good copy is an art that few people are good at. This was by far the hardest skill to learn.

How did you overcome those obstacles?

As with everything in life, you just have to keep trying new things and learning from your mistakes. I think most people fail because they give up too early. You have to push through the difficulties and keep trying even when it seems like nothing works.

Do you use any particular tools, services, or software you use to assist your work?

We use at lot of different tools at WebSeeds to help us create and promote products. It’s taken a long time for us to create our “secret” WebSeeds process that ensures repeatable product launch success.

How many products do you currently have on market today?

We currently have 5 different products available for affiliates to promote, with a few more in the final stages of testing. Our policy is to go through this process for every product that we sell to make sure that the site meets our quality and conversion standards. There are also a lot more exciting new products coming this summer.

What methods have you used in obtaining affiliates?

When we first began selling products, we didn’t make a huge effort to try to recruit affiliates. Our priority instead was to have the best quality sales page and product that we could produce.

In retrospect, I think that this did a lot for building our affiliate network. We know that when affiliates have given our products a shot, they’ve found them to convert at a higher rate. Now we try to provide as many tools and marketing materials as possible to make getting started with us as easy as possible.

What sort of services do you provide to continue to grow your affiliate network?

We value our affiliates. We understand that every extra dollar affiliates make, the more they can invest in advertising our products. We like to reward their efforts with extra bonuses and promotions, on top of the commission they receive from ClickBank.
